Reopened as Big Walnut Intermediate School: 2022

Origins and Evolution

The building located at 777 Cheshire Rd. has seen two transformations over the years, adapting to the needs of the growing Big Walnut Local School District. Originally opened in 2011 as Big Walnut Middle School, it housed 7th and 8th graders for over a decade.

In 2022, after the construction of a new High School, the Middle School students moved to 555 South Old 3C Highway. This building transitioned into the new Big Walnut Intermediate School, accommodating 5th and 6th grades. This marked a pivotal shift in the district’s organizational structure, as the school became a dedicated space for intermediate students, offering them a tailored learning environment.

Changes in Grade Bands and Expansions

The 2024 school year introduced another phase of growth for Big Walnut Intermediate School. It welcomed 4th graders and established itself as the home for students in 4th and 5th grades. This change came as part of a broader district-wide grade band realignment aimed at optimizing the educational experience for all students.

Previous Locations

Before the move to 777 Cheshire Rd., the intermediate grades were housed at 105 Baughman St., a building with its own rich history as both the former High School and Middle School, before transforming into the Big Walnut Early Learning Center in 2026. The Baughman St. location served as Big Walnut Intermediate School from 2011 to 2022 before operations were fully transferred to the current Cheshire Rd. facility.
