BWI Information

Welcome to BWI!  This page is designed to provide you with as much information as possible about our school. Whether you are considering moving into the district or you have a child attending Big Walnut Intermediate School for the first time, we hope this page will answer many of your questions.

Who Attends BWI?

BWI houses all 4th- and 5th-grade students in the district. Students from the district's four elementary schools feed into BWI. Our current enrollment is approximately 650 students.

Specials

Students will attend one of the four related arts every nine weeks.  These include:

  • Art
  • Physical Education
  • STEM
  • Music

Class Structure

Our teachers work in two-person teams, with one teacher teaching math, science, and social studies, and the partner teaching reading, writing, and social studies. Math and reading are 80-minute blocks, and advisory, science, social studies, related arts, writing, and lunch/recess are 40-minute periods.

Extra-Curricular Activities

School-sponsored athletics do not begin until 7th-grade in Ohio. Many of our students participate in community athletic organizations that use our facilities.  While we will publicize these opportunities through announcements and handouts, they are not affiliated with the school.  Things such as eligibility do not come into play at this level.

Eagle Extensions and clubs are offered throughout the year and will be communicated through our weekly Newsletter.

1:1 Program

BWI implemented a 1:1 program with Chromebooks during the 2017-18 school year.  Each student is issued a Chromebook that will stay at school. We see this as one of the many instructional tools our students and staff can use in the learning process.
